Caroline Bullock creates work that is a visual record of her ongoing attempt to understand the universe. Philosophical and scientific questions about the nature of reality and impermanence play a key role in all that she creates. She is intrigued by the unseen and subterranean and what happens at the subatomic level. The natural world, specifically the plant world, is a constant source of inspiration for her work. It teaches her about balance, seasonality, courage and endurance, and the interdependence of all things.

Inspired by the poetry of Rumi, her new series, This Place is a Dream, reflects on the transient and illusory nature of the physical world. Drawing from her curiosities about Gestalt theory, quantum physics, and Buddhist philosophy, she creates imagined landscapes using alternative photography, paint and paper.

A key element of the work is the cyanotype photographic process, which captures multiple layers of meaning—place, time, atmosphere, object, shadow, memory — within a single image. She gathers plants from her garden at the end of each season to create the cyanotype compositions, and puzzles together these fragmented images into a new, imagined landscape. The final pieces emerge as images of intricate plant patterns, exploring the interplay of positive and negative space, presence and absence, form and formlessness.

Bullock received a BFA from Georgia State University, with additional education at Art Center College of Design and Virginia Commonwealth University. Her work is included in the collections of the High Museum of Art and The Coca-Cola Company as well as numerous other private and public collections worldwide. She has exhibited in Atlanta and New York and has been reviewed in Art Papers, Luxe and House and Garden magazines. She is represented by Spalding Nix Fine Art in Atlanta, Georgia.
